Biography of Johannes Brahms

He was born in Hamburg on 7th May 1833 and died in Vienna on 3rd April 1897.

His was father was a musician (violin, horn and contrabass).

Brahms studied compositions at E. Marxsen and went on tour for the first time with the Hungarian violinist E. Reményi. On this tour he meet the violinist Joseph Joachim and he introduced

Brahms to Robert and Clara Schumann. Clara Schumann became Brahms’ companion for life after the dead of Robert Schumann in 1856.

Back in Hamburg, Brahms published his piano concert d-moll op. 15, he has worked on from 1854 till 1857.

In 1863 Brahms went to Vienna and started as a choir director at the “Wiener Singakademie”. He was the director of the “Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde Wien” from 1872 – 75. In the future he went on tour as a pianist and conductor during the winter, in the summer he applies himself to the composition.

Brahms, highly esteemed among experts, was inter alia a member of the “Berliner Akademie der Künste” an in 1886 honorary president of the “Wiener Tonkünstlerverein”, furthermore honorary citizen of Hamburg. In 1879 he got the honorary doctorate of the universities of Cambridge and Breslau.

Johannes Brahms belongs to the most famous sinfoniker. His works includes nearly all genera of music. His great model was Ludwig van Beethoven.

He died in Vienna on 3rd of April 1897.
